Local Family Still Searching For Missing Daughter


The case of boys discovered in Missouri after being abducted ended the way that all families of missing children hope it would end for them.

The family of Tabitha Tuders is one of those families.

The Tuders family is very happy for those families and glad the boys came home safely. It also gives them hope that one day Tabitha will come home as well.

"I love her to death. I talk about her everyday. There's not a day goes by that we don't talk about her," Tabitha's mother Debra Tuders said. "When I lost her a part of me went with her."

Tabitha was 13 when she disappeared nearly four years ago. The case of a child found in Missouri that had been missing for years, brought new hope Friday to a Nashville family who has been searching for almost four years for their daughter.

Tabitha Tuders disappeared in April of 2003 from her neighborhood in East Nashville.

The Hornbeck Foundation assisted in the search for Tabitha. They came to Nashville twice to offer assistance and cadaver dogs. The search came up empty, but the Tuders family said the story out of Missouri showed there was was hope.

"We're always gonna have a little big of hope," Tabitha's mother Debra Tuders said

Last year, Tabitha Tuders and Sean Hornbecks' pictures were featured on two race cars at the Highland Rim Speedway in Ridgetop.

Saturday marked the three-year anniversary of the disappearance of another Middle Tennessee child, then 13-year-old Tabitha Tuders.

She was last seen on her way to a bus stop in east Nashville on the morning of April 29, 2003, just a block from her Lillian Street home.


But authorities say she never got on the bus or made it to Bailey Middle School on that day. Her parents reported her missing that evening.

Since then, police have had little luck establishing solid leads.

Her case attracted national attention, resulting in a host of reported sightings across the country and widespread speculation about her disappearance. Saturday will be the three year anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Tabitha Tuders, and her family is keeping her memory alive.


The East Nashville girl vanished on the way to her bus stop before school, three years ago, and she has never been found.

Friday night, there will be a candle light vigil for Tabitha at Bailey middle school beginning at 7:30. Then, Saturday, there will be a prayer walk at 8:00 in the morning.

Friends and family members will walk the route from the Tuders home to Tabitha's bus stop.

On Tuesday, April 29, Tabitha Tuders didn't make it to her bus stop at the bottom of a long, wide hill on Boscobel Street in East Nashville, an easy walk from her home on nearby Lillian Street. The 13-year-old with sandy blond hair, blue eyes and a shy, sweet smile didn't make it to class at Bailey Middle School either. Nor did the straight A student who almost never got into trouble board the bus for home that afternoon. In fact, no known eyewitness saw Tabitha after 8 a.m. that day.


That night, dozens of police officers and detectives showed up at the Tuders' home to search for the missing child. As she anguishes over the disappearance of her daughter Tabitha, a lot of people have told Debra Tuders that they know how she feels.

Debra said, "I go like two days and I'll be okay, [then] I cry all day long."

But no one knows how she feels quite like Virgina Trimble.

"It's a terrible thing to not know whether your child is dead or alive," said Virginia.

Virigina's daughter Marcia Trimble was reported missing 28 years ago. Her body was found a month later. The case remains one of Nashville's most notorious unsolved murders. Now Mrs. Trimble is reaching out to Tabitha Tuder's family.

Billboard helps search for Tabitha

A new approach in the search for missing teen Tabitha Tuders comes in the form of a billboard overlooking one of Nashville's busiest stretches of interstate. The 13-year-old disappeared from her home mysteriously on April 29th and has not been seen since. In that time her face has been on TV and in the paper. Now it's also on a billboard over I-24 for everyone to see.

Monday morning, workers put the finishing touches on the brand new Tabitha Tuders billboard. Her family was there to watch it unveiled.

Tabitha's father Bo Tuders said, "I got teary eyed...she looks so pretty up there looking down on you. Just want her to come back home."

Lamar Outdoor Signs donated the the space to the family after a member of the Tuders family inquired about billboard space. Tabitha's family lends support to child's mother

It's the second time it's happened in four months - a child, on her way to the school bus stop, vanishes. Investigators don't know if the latest disappearance is tied to the Tabitha Tuders case. But Tabitha's family went to Alabama on Monday to offer their help.

They live more than 200 miles from each other, but these two moms are sharing the same nightmare. Their little girls - Tabitha Tuders and Shae Ross - are missing, both vanished without a trace.

Tabitha's mother Debra Tuders said, "Heaven came up missing on a Tuesday the same as Tabitha, at 7 am same as Tabitha. She never made it to school or the bus stop, and Tabitha didn't. Everything's the same."

Tuders vigil set for Tuesday

A candlelight vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey Middle School to commemorate the six-month disappearance of Tabitha Tuders.

Tabitha vanished April 29 on her way to catch the school bus near her East Nashville home.

Tabitha’s mother, Debra Tuders, said the family wanted to hold the ceremony as a way to bring family, friends, volunteers and some of her daughter’s classmates together again.

“I don’t want anybody to give up on her because we know she’s still out there somewhere,” Tuders said. “We’re going to find her, it’s just going to take us time. … We’re just going to keep hoping and praying that we get her back.”

Next Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of Tabitha Tuders' disappearance.


Tuders was 13 years old when she disappeared last April. She was last seen walking to her school bus stop in East Nashville.

In the past year, investigators and searchers have not turned up any good leads. But the family continues to search.

Tuders was honored at Highland Rim Speedway in Ridgetop Saturday night. The track held the first-annual "Race For Tabitha."

Tabitha and her family spent many Saturday nights at the race track. After she disappeared, friends and relatives formed a race team called Team Tabitha. The team includes four cars with Tuders' picture on them.

Failing Tabitha Tuders

Since Tabitha Tuders vanished from her East Nashville home one year ago this week, Metro police have bungled nearly all aspects of her case and, worse, show no signs that they learned any lessons from the tragic ordeal.


It's difficult to identify any aspect of the investigation that the department has handled well. Detectives have been slow to interview suspects, track leads, keep the family informed and interview people who best knew the missing girl, whose 14th birthday came and went in February. There's no clear sense among the family and media about who's in charge of the case. It's almost as if the department wishes that people would stop caring about the fate of the young teen who woke up on a Tuesday morning, walked toward her bus stop and vanished.

One year later, community keeps hope alive for Tabitha

One year after her disappearance from an East Nashville bus stop, Tabitha Tuders' family and friends are refusing to give up hope. On Thursday morning, the community gathered to walk and remember, and to send the message that they aren't giving up on their search.

Carrying a missing child's poster of Tabitha to lead the way, they walked the same walk she walked one year ago. Tabitha's father and mother, Bo and Debra Tuders, marched the same fateful trip they had gone over a thousand times. But this time it was exactly one year after the day she headed toward the bus stop two blocks away but disappeared, never to be seen again.

Tabitha Tuders' family marks anniversary of disappearance with hope, love


One year ago Thursday, a 13-year-old East Nashville girl disappeared while waiting for her school bus. Early Thursday morning, Tabitha Tuders' family and friends gathered to mark the somber anniversary, as well as to ask everyone to keep up hope and keep looking for Tabitha.

A missing poster still hangs on the porch of the Tuders' Lillian Street home, where friends gathered for the "Continue the Search" walk. Inside the house, Tabitha's room is just as she left it as she headed for the school bus stop one year ago.
